North East Architectural Firm Encouraged By Investment In Education

MARCH 2011: North East architectural firm, Niven Architects, has welcomed an announcement by the government that it plans to introduce a £90 million package of capital funding for 6th Form Colleges in the new financial year.

The funding is designed to enable colleges across England to make essential improvements to buildings, while helping schools and academies with integrated sixth forms to meet the demand for additional 16-19 student places. Of the £90 million fund, £57 million has been allocated for priority building work and £30 million will be invested in making all sixth form colleges eligible for Devolved Formula Capital.

Niven Architects has worked extensively in the education sector and has estimated that the Devolved Formula Capital will enable the average sixth-form college to invest in £40,000 worth of architectural and building improvements. This will result in a minimum level of investment of almost £1 million across the region, but it is a share in the £57 million that is of particular importance.

Simon Crowe, Architectural Director, Niven Architects says: "The announcement by Schools Minister, Lord Hill, earlier this year was welcomed by all those working in the education sector. However, while all institutions will receive support in the region of £40,000 it is vital that colleges and those eligible schools and academies act quickly to stake a claim on a share of the £57 million set aside for priority building work.

"Through our work in the sector we understand the positive impact enhancing the buildings and facilities, as well as the overall environment, can have on a college, its people and as a result on its success and achievements. As such we would urge institutions to begin preparing applications for funding early and working with a consultant that can offer pre-development support, which will significantly enhance any application. Competition for the funding will be fierce and we hope that colleges and institutions across the North East invest time in outlining their case for funding, as there are some great models of best practice in terms of building design in the region that can be emulated on both a large and small scale."

Niven Architects is a leading architectural practice providing a holistic service from concept through to final delivery. It has vast experience in the education sector and has recently delivered projects for Redcar & Cleveland College, Durham 6th Form College, Middlesbrough College and Cleveland College of Art & Design, among others.

The company has extensive experience and expertise spanning 25 years in providing quality and excellence in all aspects of, architectural design and project management. Its service proposition is robust and comprises pre-development consultation, architectural design, visualisation, planning, project management, sustainability services, interior design and retail design services. While it has a rich heritage in North East England, the practice works within all development sectors nationally and in some cases internationally.

Experts Will Analyse The Budget As It Unfolds At North East Event

MARCH 2011: Next week's Budget is looming and the anticipation of how it will affect businesses and impact upon industry is apparent across all sectors and following severe public sector cuts, the North East is particularly interested in what the Chancellor will announce.

The Budget announcement scheduled for 1pm on Wednesday 23 March 2011 is set to coincide with Energy & Environment North East 2011, a free event hosted by RENEW which will be held at the Xcel Centre in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham on the same day (23 March 2011) and will feature an extensive programme of exhibitions, speakers and workshops.

Hundreds of representatives from the green sector have already signed up to the free event designed to enable North East SME's active in the energy and environmental sectors to come together and reflect on the growth of the sector, while looking ahead to what the future holds for businesses operating in the region.

Now, RENEW is urging other SMEs in the region to register as a special Budget focused interactive session has been added to the programme enabling all delegates to watch the Budget as it unfolds live at the event with analysis from the event's experts including Damian McGann, Santander, Graham Hillier, CPI, Carl Nichols, WRAP and the Chair of the event, John Barton, RENEW among others.

In addition to the Budget based session, the free one-day event will comprise a welcome and keynote speech from a leading industry figure, a review of the National Landscape and advice around Green Project Finance, followed by a Regional Landscape Review and Q&A session with the Speaker Panel. In the afternoon there will be a host of workshops for delegates to attend, spanning a wide range of energy and environmental topics.

Moreover, one of the workshops will explore the Micro-Renewables market with a particular focus on the latest Government announcement on 10 March 2011 regarding the details of the Renewable Heat Incentive policy, which is set to revolutionise the way heat, is generated and used in buildings and homes from summer 2011 onwards. This is the first financial support scheme for renewable heat of its kind in the world. The RHI policy, which will provide long-term financial support to renewable heat installations to encourage the uptake of renewable heat will be discussed in detail and its implications debated.

John Barton, Project Director, RENEW said: "The Budget poses serious questions and potential issues for the region and more specifically the burgeoning green sector in the North East. Our event is designed to explore the rapid growth of the energy and environmental sector, provide an insight into the shape of its future and discuss key trends and emerging markets while providing advice and guidance through our panel of experts and the workshop programme.

"We had always planned to reference the Budget throughout the day, but now it is set to be announced on the actual day of the event we felt it was vitally important to offer all delegates the opportunity to not only hear the Chancellor's speech live, but to offer analysis and viewpoint commentary from our panel of experts and leading industry figures. It is our hope that Energy & Environment North East 2011 will be the place to be for the best Budget round-up in terms of how the region will be affected and more specifically the new challenges or opportunities facing our green industries. There are still spaces available at the event and we'd encouraged any interested SMEs to contact the events team to register."

RENEW facilitates and delivers commercial energy and environmental technology projects across North East England and is committed to ensuring the region is at the forefront of the UK's low carbon and sustainable energy drive.

Working with businesses, communities, investors, regulators and technology suppliers RENEW helps low carbon energy and environmental technology projects make the transition from development to the marketplace. Additionally, it provides strategic support to a diverse range of businesses looking to maximise the economic opportunities and carbon reductions from the application of these projects.

The one-day event is free to all regional SMEs operating in the sector, but registration is essential. Furthermore, RENEW is inviting regional SMEs to benefit from free exhibition space at the event.

NESRB

Success at the First Annual Conference for the NESRB

Contact Velvet for hi-res imagesMARCH 2011: Over 70 delegates from the North East turned out last week for the first Annual Conference of the North East Sustainable Resources Board, which highlighted the work achieved by the NESRB in its first year and focused on the ‘Opportunities for Today’ that are available to help the waste/resource management sector in the North East.

The event, organised by the NESRB and Renew, held at the Wilton Centre, was designed to promote the Board and showcase its achievements in its first year of operation. The Board aims to provide companies in the North East with leadership support and strategic guidance in relation to waste and resource management. The day was structured around six speakers who highlighted opportunities regarding various waste and resource management issues.

The conference began with a welcome address from The Right Honourable Lord Cunningham of Felling, chair of the NESRB, who highlighted the progress made by the Board in its first year and its visions for the future. Lord Cunningham declared that in 2009, £33 million worth of waste resources were sent to landfill in the North East and that the NESRB aimed to reduce that figure and make a real difference by putting the North East at the forefront of the waste management sector.

Lord Cunningham, said: “We are very pleased with the excellent turn out at the event today with representatives from both private and public sector organisations and we feel it has been a great success. The event concludes the Board’s first year in existence in which we have delivered real projects that offer real value for both commercial and industrial waste services. We have developed a unique GIS mapping tool so people can access waste and resource disposal and treatment facilities in the North East and as part of today’s conference we are launching the Sustainable Resource Management Plan, which scopes out how businesses could reduce costs by using resources more sustainably.”

He added: “We were delighted to welcome representatives from Defra and WRAP to the conference to talk about how the North East can link with national organisations to achieve our aims and become more resource efficient.”

Neil, Thornton, Director of Climate, Waste and Atmosphere at Defra, gave an overview of the national waste landscape and resource sustainability and the Government’s views on upcoming ‘green’ issues. Regarding the event, he said: “I am pleased to be able to have had the opportunity to speak about the Government’s response to sustainability resources and the green economy.”

Carl Nichols, Head of Contract Management at WRAP, spoke about how it is helping North East SME’s increase their resource efficiency using three online programs that have been launched:

- Ripple Effect: a free water efficiency initiative that can benefit businesses of all sizes and can help reduce water use and save money.

- Rethink Waste: a free online training programme to help manufacturers reduce waste, improve resource efficiency and save money.

- eQuip: a leasing scheme set up by WRAP that helps companies secure financial assistance for new and second hand recycling plant and machinery.

Mr. Nichols said: “The conference has been a great success. I welcome the opportunity to talk about what WRAP is doing to support SMEs to become more resource efficient and would encourage businesses in the region to contacts us and use the support and resources that are available to them.”

Peter Scholes of Urban Mines presented the interim results of the North East Commercial and Industrial Waste Survey and Dioni Spiliopoulou of Arup, demonstrated the new GIS Waste Resources Portal that the NESRB has developed. Andrew Smith of Government Office for the North East and Chair of the Board’s Steering Group, launched the Scoping Document of the Resource Management Plan.

Delegates ended the day with a site visit to the new Anaerobic Digestion Development Centre (ADDC) at Wilton, which is an open access, asset-based facility operated by CPI. It is designed to help organisations of all sizes solve organic waste problems quickly and cost effectively through the development of bespoke anaerobic technologies. They also saw the Innovation Accelerator, which assists SMEs in science, technology, engineering and the life sciences by providing guidance in intellectual property, business start-up support, market intelligence, entrepreneur programmes, technology commercialisation and the innovation accelerator incubator.

The NESRB was officially launched in January 2010 with the remit of providing leadership and vision to promote and develop the concept of waste as a resource and maximise the commercial opportunities from those resources. It creates value out of recovered resources to bring investment into the North East and creates low carbon business opportunities. It aims to encourage collaborative work between public and private sectors and change businesses concept of waste, into a valuable resources, which they can use.

Aesica Completes European Acquisitions

MARCH 2011: Aesica Pharmaceuticals has today announced (1st March 2011) that it has successfully completed the acquisition of three manufacturing sites in Germany and Italy from leading biopharma company, UCB.

The acquisition of the European sites in Monheim, Zwickau and Pianezza demonstrates Aesica's commitment to continually enhancing its service offering to the global pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries.* It is the company's first acquisition outside the UK and will almost double the capabilities of the business.

Moreover, the arrangement is particularly important to Aesica as it represents the beginning of a strategic partnership with UCB, which comprises a long-term supply agreement between both companies, providing a strong platform for Aesica to develop new business streams for the sites.

In addition to establishing a presence in Europe, the deal represents an extension to the current Aesica offer and technological capability. While Aesica currently offers extensive services in relation to the manufacture of formulated products, its move into Europe will enable it to enhance its injectables and oral liquid dosage capability, as well as introducing hard encapsulation technology to its service portfolio.

Furthermore, the sites at Monheim and Pianezza will bolster Aesica's current packaging capabilities and the company will operate a line dedicated purely for the Japanese market, which is strategically vital as the company focuses on expansion across Asia.

Dr. Robert Hardy, Chief Executive, Aesica, says: "The acquisition of the three UCB manufacturing sites is strategically crucial for our business as we extend and enhance our current offering and establish a presence in Europe. We will fully utilise the expertise and knowledge across the current team at each of the sites to facilitate our continued expansion and to achieve our vision of becoming the number one supplier of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients and Formulated Products to the pharmaceutical industry.

"We believe Europe will be a key market for us in 2011 and to have secured such high profile sites as well as agreeing a long-term strategic partnership to supply UCB, is testament to our commitment to being recognised as a leader in the industry. Our unique proposition lies in our flexible and bespoke approach to service delivery, coupled with our ability to develop products from the initial clinical stage through to final commercial supply. Furthermore, the long established and proven expertise we provide enables us to provide primary and secondary contract manufacturing services to the highest possible standards. By acquiring the sites in Europe we have not only almost doubled our workforce but we have gained new technological capability, which will further enhance and strengthen our unique service proposition."

He concludes: "It is this full service offer and our dedication to exceptional service standards that truly sets Aesica apart from our counterparts and we believe we are now in a position to compete fully with the current market leaders."

While all staff across the three sites have transferred to Aesica, a new team from the UK have relocated to aid the transition and direct operations at the sites. Simon Clough, who has been with Aesica for over three years has been appointed Managing Director, Formulated Products Business Unit and will lead the new team from his base at the Monheim site.

Aesica was formed in September 2004 through a management buyout of a former BASF site in Cramlington. Northumberland, backed by private equity firm LDC, which took a significant stake in the business and has provided continued strategic and financial support along with Lloyds Bank Corporate Markets Acquisition Finance. This continued backing has given Aesica access to the capital required to support its ongoing programme of organic growth and complementary acquisitions.

Aesica supplies contract development and contract manufacturing services for Formulated Products and Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients to a host of the world's leading pharmaceutical companies and emerging biotechnology organisations.

Conference to Encourage More Innovation in Low Carbon Technology in the North East

MARCH 2011: North East SME's will be encouraged to continue innovation in low carbon products and services at a free event this March.

SME's active in the energy and environmental sectors are coming together at the
Energy and Environment North East 2011 event, organised by RENEW held at the Xcel Centre in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham on Wednesday 23 March 2011.

John Barton, Project Director, RENEW, will be speaking at the event on what achievements North East businesses have made and how innovation in the sector can grow. He said: "Some ground-breaking technologies are being explored in the region with exciting projects taking shape all the time. Anaerobic digestion is a particularly hot topic in the sector and we have various companies looking at the process to derive value from waste, reducing overall waste to landfill figures and generating low carbon alternative fuels. Emerald Biogas have recently started building work on the first commercial anaerobic digestion plant in Newton Aycliffe with more plants in planning stages. In the area of renewables generation, we have also seen the impact and success of offshore wind projects alongside the growth of supply chain businesses in the Teesside area and the explosion of smaller firms dealing in micro renewables.

"Recycling is also big business and there is currently a plant at Wilton, which recycles food grade plastic wastes and more recently, mixed plastics. Another innovation in recycling has been lead by PYreco who will shortly announce the commencement of a facility to convert used tyres back into their constituent materials of steel, oil and carbon black.

"Despite uncertainties in government funding we must maintain this momentum, driving projects forward and encouraging businesses to be part of this burgeoning sector and this event will enable us to do that, keeping North East SMEs at the forefront of the UK's low carbon and sustainable energy drive.

"The unique thing about this event is that we are catering for the whole of the energy and environment sector covering the diverse range of opportunities including waste management, alternative energy, photovoltaics, biomass, carbon finance, carbon capture storage, energy management, hydro, micro renewables, water supply and waste water treat, wave and tidal, wind and recovery and recycling."

The free one-day event will comprise a welcome and keynote speech from a leading industry figure, a review of the National Landscape and advice around Green Project Finance, followed by a Regional Landscape Review and Q&A session with the Speaker Panel. In the afternoon there will be a host of workshops for delegates to attend, spanning a wide range of energy and environmental topics.

Keynote speakers are confirmed as Graham Hillier, Director of Strategy and Futures at CPI, Carl Nicholls from WRAP, Damian McGann from Santander and John Barton of RENEW.

New Network Launched To Grow the Energy & Environmental Industries

MARCH 2011: A new network in the North East has experienced a great response to its launch with over 120 members already signed up. The Energy and Environmental Industries Forum (EEIF) was launched in January 2011 with the aim to help businesses, organisations and agencies in the energy and environmental industries meet, connect and grow.

The EEIF was formed by Renew, which is responsible for facilitating and delivering commercial energy and environmental technology projects across the North East. The network was exclusively created to encourage the continued growth of the energy and environmental sector, which continues to play an increasingly important role in the region.

Free membership to the EEIF continues to be available to interested companies, organisations and individuals, who can access a wide range of benefits. Current members of the EEIF cover a broad and diverse range of sectors including the waste-management, biomass, renewables, environmental consulting, photovoltaic-systems, carbon-finance, carbon-capture and storage, energy-management, hydro, micro-renewables, wind, water-supply, waste water treatment, environmental-monitoring, noise and vibration control, alternative-fuel, air-pollution and geothermal industries. In addition, many local authorities have also signed up to the network.

The most beneficial resource that members can access is a tender and contracts search facility, which gives access to an extensive list of available tenders from a range of categories for both large and small contracts from the UK and America, as well as a European and US Market Browser covering a variety of sectors. There are over 1,600 tenders available for members to view free of charge.

Once registered companies have the ability to create an individual profile page, which can be used to join specific sectors before connecting with other members. The EEIF also has an extensive events programme, which currently details over thirty events from the energy and environmental sectors throughout 2011 and is growing on a daily bases as members promote their events. Moreover, the EEIF is set to announce its own calendar of events in the coming weeks, which will add further value to members.

Members can also access the daily news feed and receive a weekly e-newsletter, which has an overview of the previous weeks news, as well detailing upcoming events and job opportunities.

Chris Hayward, Acting Director of Renew said: "That so many members are already enjoying the benefits of the EEIF is encouraging, as the network is designed to support this growing sector especially across North East England. Feedback we have collated to date clearly shows that the tender search service is one of the EEIF's most valuable resources enabling members to easily view all competitive opportunities across the UK and indeed further afield. This service alone is reason enough to register to become a member, as such access is usually cost prohibitive to many SMEs and organisations.

"While the network is growing from strength to strength, we'd like to encourage other business, organisations and local authorities that are yet to register to sign up, as the EEIF provides a great platform to connect with other like-minded individuals, share experiences and knowledge and potentially trade."

Membership is currently free and Renew is urging both private and public sector organisations to visit www.eeif.co.uk and sign up to experience the many benefits the network offers.

The network will be officially launched by Renew at the Energy and Environment North East 2011 event on Wednesday 23 March at the Excel Centre, Newton Aycliffe in County Durham. Entry and exhibition stands are free to North East companies operating in this sector.

For further information about the EEIF or to become a member please visit www.eeif.co.uk
